What to do in Hurghada when the sea is closed

Hurghada sits on an open stretch of the Red Sea and the northerly wind builds fast in winter and early spring. The port authority issues a closure for small craft, tour operators cancel every boat trip that morning, and your booking is normally moved to the next open day or refunded.

The good news: the wind rarely brings rain, the sun still shines, and the city itself carries on as normal. You lose the sea, not the day.

Honest options, ranked by how well they hold up in strong wind:

1. 1Spa and beauty afternoon: indoors, warm, and a driver comes to your hotel. Two to three hours of hammam, massage, facial or nails, from EUR 17.
2. 2Hurghada Grand Aquarium: fully indoor, good for families, about 90 minutes.
3. 3Old Town (El Dahar) and the Marina: cafes, souks and seafood restaurants, though sand blows in the open streets.
4. 4Desert quad or buggy tour: still runs on most windy days, but expect dust in your face and bring a scarf.
5. 5Hotel pool: fine if your pool is sheltered, unpleasant if it faces the sea.
6. 6Shopping at Senzo Mall: air-conditioned but small.

A spa day is the only option on the list where the wind is genuinely irrelevant and where you do not have to organise transport yourself.

Pick by how much time you have and who you are with:

• Half day for one guest: Turkish hammam (90 min, EUR 22) then the 60-minute relax massage (EUR 17). Around 3 hours door to door.

The spa opens at 10:00 and takes last starts at 18:00, so even a late decision at 16:00 still leaves room for a massage, and the beauty salon runs until 22:00 if the afternoon is already gone.

On windy days demand rises, so the earlier you message, the more choice you have of hammam times. Massages are easier to fit at short notice than the 2-hour rituals.

Yes in nearly all cases. Licensed operators must refund or rebook when the port is closed, because the closure is an official order, not their choice. Ask for a rebooking first if you have several days left; ask for a refund if you leave within 48 hours. Keep the WhatsApp message or email from the operator as proof.
